Set inside a towering metal cage, Honour Bound uses spectacular aerial acrobatics, theatre, dance and film to tell the story of Australian David Hicks and his incarceration in Guantanamo Bay. This deeply human story is seen through the eyes of Hicks's parents, combining their moving testimony with letters, internal Pentagon papers and the accounts of former detainees.

Honour Bound won the Helpmann Award for Best Visual or Physical Theatre Production.

Nigel Jamieson has directed some of the world's most enthralling large-scale productions, creating spectacular moments such as 400 Cambodian monks chanting in Angkor Wat and the Tin Symphony during the Opening Ceremony of the Sydney 2000 Olympics.


As Artistic Director of Australian Dance Theatre, Garry Stewart's choreography is renowned for the intense physicality of its style and its exploration of bodies pushed to physical and emotional extremes.

この作品は、アメリカ軍によるアフガニスタンの捕虜収容所で行われた捕虜虐待の事実を基に出来ています。日本でも一時的にニュースで大々的に取り上げられたので、記憶にある方も多いと思います。アルカイーダに関与していたと思われるオーストラリア人、デイヴィット・ヒックスとその両親。そして、それをとりまく政府動向。

授業で、政治と芸術の関連についてよく触れますが、ここまで、政治的に強いメッセージをもった芸術作品には今までであったことがありません。観終わったあと、好きとか嫌いとか、この作品を楽しんだとか楽しまなかったとか、そういうレベルでは物を語れないショック状態になりました。


人間の残忍性とエゴイズム。


途中、これが現実で起きていたということを証明するために、グアンタナマモ基地やその他の収容所で米兵によって撮影された写真の数々が投影されました。それと同時に、舞台上では裸の役者たちが、その心理的／肉体的様子を再現しています。観ていて、嗚咽をもらす人もいるぐらい生々しい「感情」が場内を満たしました。

作品全体の印象は、舞台というよりドキュメンタリー。ナレーターや実際の報道声明や、映像を使用しているため、役者６人の台詞はありませんが、彼らの身体表現があまりにも心理的につよいメッセージ性をもっていて、動き事態が「ダンス」という枠を超えた振り付けでした。（むしろ体操にちかい。）


見終わったあと、この作品が好きとか嫌いとか、楽しんだとか楽しまなかったとか、そういった気持ちは全く湧きませんでした。ただ、目の前で起きたことが、あまりにも衝撃的で、現実的なのか、非現実的なのかさえもわからない状態でした。

「芸術で世界をうごかせるのか」とか「芸術は人に訴える力がある」となどというフレーズをよく耳にします。もし、それが本当ならば、この作品は間違いなくその原動力になると思います。けれど、ただ私たちが芸術に想いを託して、想いや願いををひとつの「作品」として終わらせてしまうのであれば、そこから先には進めないと思います。大切なのは、人々に「気づいて」もらい、その「気づき」を「行動」に移してもらうことです。この作品が、ひとつの舞台作品として終わらないように、その後につながるように、制作側も観客も意識することが大切だと思いました。
