A statement issued by his managers Ingpen & Williams said: “It has always been Mr Brendel’s intention to stop performing while still at the peak of his powers, and he makes this decision while continuing to attract capacity audiences throughout the world. He dislikes the idea of farewell tours and concerts and prefers to just stop after a full schedule of concerts throughout 2008.”

Brendel will be 77 when he steps off the concert stage for the final time, having performed Mozart’s Piano Concerto No 9 with the Vienna Philharmonic and Sir Charles Mackerras, at Vienna’s Musikverein. He will, however, continue his writing, and to give lectures.



世界中が認める巨匠アルフレッド・ブレンデルが、ステージから退くと公式発表をしました。

一ファンとしては、悲しいような、安心したような複雑な思いです。今年ブレンデルのリサイタルを聴きにいきましたが、正直「おじいちゃん」な風貌と些か精彩を欠いたような演奏に少し驚いた記憶があります。恐らく、私の脳裏には、2004年に75歳を迎えた園田高弘先生のサントリーホールでの矍鑠とした、まるでまだ還暦前のような姿があったからだと思います…

黄金期をすぎて、円熟期に入る。人前で演奏をするのは、それはそれは、沢山の体力、精神力が要求されます。だから、亡くなるまで演奏するという選択も、ここで辞めようと決めてリタイアする選択もどちらも、その人の考えがダイレクトに反映されます。

このブレンデルの発表は、thoughtfulだと思います。自分でこれが「最後」と決めて、演奏活動をするのは、とても大きな決断だったはずです。世界中から愛されて、常に彼の演奏を聴きたいと切に願う人々が待っていて、でも、彼は「その時」を決めました。なんだか、サムライに通じる潔さを感じます。「桜」の舞い散るイメージが目の前をよぎっていきます。

I wanted to be a dissenting positive voice, not just another jabberer against a beleaguered, vulnerable young woman... but I just can't. She had full editorial control of this video. Let's just start again.

BBCシンフォニー：
チャールズ皇太子がいらっしゃって、警備が空港並でした。スタッフもパスポート持参で、セキュリティーチェックだけで20分も！Tavenerの１曲目は非常によかったです。教会旋法がいっぱいで、会場のウェストミンスター大聖堂にぴったり。２曲目は…約70〜80分の大曲で…でも、教会の構造や音響効果をフルに活かした作品でした（弦楽隊を客席後方の上空回廊へ配置したり、オルガンをつかったり）

LSOファミリーコンサート：
なにがびっくりって、手話通訳がついていたこと！さ・ら・に！！演奏の手話通訳も！手話通訳というより、上半身だけで音楽を表現する専門の手話通訳者！これは日本にも是非是非もちかえりたい習慣です。その他にも、パワポを駆使して、視覚的にも子供達にわかりやすい内容になっていました。あとは、皆で歌おう＆演奏しようというコーナーがあって、子供達がめいめいに持ってきた楽器をオケと一緒に弾いていました。楽員の子供？もステージの奏者横にちんまり座っていたり、一緒に演奏していたり（!?）して、なんだか微笑ましかったです。ちなみに楽員の服装は、私服！指揮者もヴィンテージジーンズに黒のシャツでした。もちろん質問コーナーもあって、なかなか面白かったです。


南アフリカのコンサート：
これは、やっぱり血の問題です。コミュニティーの結束力の強さにも驚きました。産まれて初めてこんなに沢山のアフリカ人の人たちと一度に会いました。皆、気さくで面白い！ちょっと英語が聴き取りにくかったけれど…何気ないやりとりから、本当にココロが温かいのが良く伝わってきました。

英国王立歌劇場とBP（英国の石油会社）が協力して、英国王立歌劇場でのバレエやオペラが英国各地に設置された大スクリーンに生中継されます。日本ではなかなかおめにかかれない企画です。

↑をみていたら、無性にフランツ・モア氏の『ピアノの巨匠たちとともに』にを読み返したくなりました。日本ピアノ調律師協会主催のモア氏の来日講演会に行ったのも今となっては、古い思い出です。といっても、たぶん３年ぐらい前で、偶然講演会へのチケットがタダで手に入って、ワクワクして行ったものです。行きがけに駅（月島？）からタクシーに一緒に乗せてくださった女性は今、どうされてることでしょう…


ホロヴィッツと言えば、初めて私がホロヴィッツという名を知ったのは、高校の音楽史の授業、だっと思います。シューマンのトロイメライの映像は衝撃的でした。

何が衝撃か。

ホロヴィッツが亡命後、初めてモスクワでの開いたリサイタル。もちろんそれだけでも観衆は感極まる想いでしょうが、そのアンコールでのトロイメライで観客が表情は人々の胸の内を物語っていました。特に老紳士が、ただ目をつむって涙を静かに流す姿は、あれ以来、ひと時も忘れたことはありませんし、ホロヴィッツという名前を見聞きするたびに、その老紳士を思い出します。ホロヴィッツほど「マエストロ」という言葉が似合うピアニストも少ないのではないかと思います。

で、その思い出の映像を発見。

公演日は、2008年１月28日〜２月17日で、会場は今年６月にリニューアルオープンするロイヤル・フェスティバル・ホールです。

フルタイム学生なので、Concessionという特別割引が受けられて、なんと全部半額に！最初は一番安い席を押さえていたんだけれど、半額とわかったので、一つグレードアップ。それでも、6.5〜9ポンド。全８公演取って、送料込で59ポンドです。キーシンのS席１枚より安いなんて。この国、素晴らしい。

全８公演購入の特典で、最終公演後の特別パーティ（Special Reception)の招待券も来るそうです。いえーいw　と思ったら、ブレンデルのリサイタルも発見！これは、何が何でもいかないと！！！！！念願のブレンデルの生演奏。

たまたま聴いていたBBC Radio4で出会った面白い番組。
Music Feature。

今日の特集は、あの有名なJ.S.Bach作曲（とされている）トッカータとフーガニ単調の疑惑を巡ってです。あー、面白い。

Bach's Toccata and Fugue in D minor for organ has delighted both audiences and musicians for centuries. Recently, however, musicologists have been suggesting this music is not what it seems. Could Bach's most famous work even be a fake? Simon Townley investigates.

この作品は、現在はオルガンのための作品として世界中で演奏され、クラシック音楽愛好家でなくても誰もが一度は聴いたことがある音楽とされているけれど、本当に「J.S.Bach」が作曲したのか。問題は、バッハ直筆のマニュスクリプトがなく、写しのファクシミリしか存在しない上に「J.S.Bach」の明記が無いことや、バッハが作曲した他のどの曲にも似ていないということや、だいたいオルガンのために作曲したのかすら確定出来ないということ。かといって、バッハが作曲しなかったという証拠もない。といって、バッハ研究者やオルガニスト達が、20年以上この作品を巡って、研究／論争を繰り広げているのです。

途中、サイモン・タウンリーが面白い表現をしていました。

「J.S.Bach in CSI.」笑


Exactly!! つまり、あのアメリカの科学捜査のバッハ版だということ。でも、音楽学の研究は、ご存知の方も多いと思いますが、最新の科学を駆使して研究が行われているのです。直筆や初版楽譜の紙やインクの質の調査。（絵画分野ではX線使って実際には見えない下に書かかれた部分などを明らかにしたりしますよね）こういう研究、楽しいだろうな。モーツァルトがどうしたとか、ベートヴェンの不滅の恋人とか。単なるミーハー心なのかもしれないけれど、思い起こせば、こういう裏話が大好きで、音楽史にのめり込んだんでした。神様のように崇められる作曲家も、人間ですからね。そういう人間臭いところをちょっとでも知りたくて、裏話本を読みあさったものです。
